How roulette works
A ball is spun around a numbered wheel and you bet on where it will land. You can back a single number, a group of numbers, a colour, odd or even, or high (19–36) or low (1–18). Every spin is independent, so previous results have no effect on the next one.
European vs American roulette
The version you choose matters more than any betting pattern:
- European roulette has 37 pockets (1–36 plus a single zero). The house edge is about 2.7%.
- French roulette uses the same wheel, but with the La Partage rule you get half of an even-money stake back if the ball lands on zero, cutting the edge on those bets to about 1.35%.
- American roulette adds a double zero (38 pockets), which raises the house edge to about 5.26%.
If you're choosing between them, a single-zero wheel gives you better value.

The payouts are the same whichever bet you pick; the zero is what gives the casino its edge. No betting system, including the Martingale, can change that.
