How free slots work

A slot has reels of symbols that spin and stop at random. You win when matching symbols land on a payline or, in some games, anywhere on neighbouring reels. The paytable shows what each symbol pays and how the features work. In a demo, you can open it whenever you like without spending anything.

A random number generator sets the result of every spin the moment you press spin. So the spinning reels just show a result that the game has already chosen. Also, previous spins have no effect on the next one, and no slot is ever “due” a win.

Common slot features

  • Wilds stand in for other symbols to help complete a win.
  • Scatters usually pay or trigger a feature wherever they land.
  • Free spins are bonus rounds that play without using your balance.
  • Expanding symbols grow to fill a whole reel. For example, Book of Ra Deluxe picks a special expanding symbol for its free games.
  • Gamble features, found in many classic games, let you risk a win on a guess such as a card colour.

Types of free slots you can play here

Classic fruit games such as Sizzling Hot, Burning Hot and Hot Seven use simple symbols like cherries, bells and sevens. They have few paylines and no complex bonus rounds, so they are the easiest place to start.

Book-style games, including Book of Ra, Book of Ra Deluxe and Book of Aztec, build towards free spins with an expanding symbol. Because the big wins tend to come in the bonus, these games can feel quiet between features.

Modern video slots such as Starburst, Buffalo Blitz and Age of the Gods have more ways to win and themed features. In real-money play, Age of the Gods also connects to progressive jackpots, which a demo cannot show. Finally, the list includes Keno and Bingo, which are number games rather than reel slots.

RTP and volatility in free slots

RTP, or return to player, is the share of all money staked that a slot is designed to pay back over millions of spins. For example, a 96% RTP means the game pays back £96 for every £100 staked on average, across all players. It does not mean you will get £96 back from your own £100. Volatility, meanwhile, describes how wins are spread out. Low volatility slots pay small wins often, while high volatility slots pay less often but can pay bigger amounts.

Most games show their RTP and volatility in the help or information screen. Free slots are a good way to get a feel for volatility, since you can watch how often wins land. However, a demo session is far too short to show the RTP in action. Our short video on RTP and volatility explains both ideas in under two minutes.

UK rules for real-money slots

Demo games are free of these limits, but they apply whenever you play slots for real money on a UK-licensed site:

  • The maximum stake is £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, and £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24.
  • Casinos cannot offer autoplay, and each spin must last at least 2.5 seconds.
  • Games may not include turbo or slam-stop features, which speed up play.
  • Games must not celebrate a “win” that is smaller than your stake.
  • Casinos must verify your age before you play, even on their free demos.

Free slots FAQs

Do I need to download anything to play free slots?

No. All the free slots on this page run in your web browser, with no download, no sign-up and no deposit.

Can I win real money on free slots?

No. Demo credits have no cash value, so any winnings are for fun only and cannot be withdrawn.

Are free slots the same as real-money slots?

They look and play the same, with the same features. Results are random, though, so a demo tells you nothing about what will happen when you play for real.

Why do UK casinos ask me to register to play free slots?

Since May 2019, UK-licensed casinos have had to verify your age before you can play their free-to-play games.
