The game below is Playtech’s Cashback Blackjack, loaded in demo mode. It plays like standard blackjack, but, as the name suggests, it also adds a cashback option. Because rules vary between versions, open the game’s help screen first to check its payouts and dealer rules.

Demo chips have no cash value. If the game does not load, refresh the page or try another browser. 18+.

How to play free blackjack

Blackjack is a card game played against the dealer, not against other players. Your goal is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over. Cards 2 to 10 count at face value. Jacks, queens and kings count as 10. An ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand more.

  1. First, choose a chip size and place your bet.
  2. Next, you and the dealer each get two cards. One of the dealer’s cards is usually face up.
  3. Then decide how to play your hand: hit, stand, double down or split.
  4. When you stand, the dealer reveals the hidden card and draws by fixed rules.
  5. Finally, the hands are compared. If you beat the dealer, you win. If you tie, your stake is returned, which is called a push.

Your options on each hand

StandKeep your total and end your turn.
Double downDouble your stake, take one more card, then stand.
SplitTurn a pair into two hands, with a second stake of the same size.
InsuranceA side bet, offered when the dealer shows an ace. It pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack.
SurrenderWhere allowed, give up the hand and get half your stake back.

Free blackjack rules and payouts

A blackjack is an ace plus any 10-value card as your first two cards. In most games it pays 3 to 2, so a £10 bet wins £15. Other winning hands pay even money. However, if you go over 21 you bust and lose straight away, even if the dealer busts later. That rule is the main source of the casino’s edge.

The dealer has no choices to make. Instead, they must draw on 16 or less and stand on 17 or more. Some tables make the dealer hit a “soft 17”, which is a 17 that includes an ace counted as 11. This rule slightly favours the casino. Similarly, the number of decks and the rules on doubling and surrender all change the odds a little. So it is worth reading the rules before you play free blackjack or real-money blackjack.

Basic strategy for free blackjack

Basic strategy is the mathematically best way to play each hand, based on your total and the dealer’s up card. It does not guarantee wins. Still, it cuts the house edge to its lowest level, and free blackjack is a risk-free way to practise it. Here are the key ideas:

  • Stand on a hard 17 or more. A “hard” hand has no ace counted as 11.
  • With a hard 12 to 16, stand if the dealer shows 2 to 6, but hit 12 against a 2 or 3. Hit if the dealer shows 7 or higher.
  • Always hit a hard 8 or less, because you cannot bust.
  • Double down on 11 against most dealer cards, and on 10 when the dealer shows 2 to 9.
  • Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives.
  • Hit a soft 17 or lower, unless doubling is the stronger play for the rules and the dealer’s card.
  • Skip insurance. It is a separate bet with a higher house edge than the main game.

Strategy charts differ slightly with the rules, so use one that matches the game you play. Also, online blackjack uses a random number generator and usually reshuffles after every hand. As a result, card counting does not work online.

Blackjack odds and house edge

Blackjack has one of the lowest house edges in the casino, but only when you play well. With typical rules and perfect basic strategy, the edge is often quoted at around 0.5%. In other words, the game is designed to keep about 50p of every £100 staked over a very long run. By contrast, guessing or copying the dealer’s rules pushes the edge up to several per cent.

Watch the payout for a blackjack, too. A table that pays 6 to 5 instead of 3 to 2 adds roughly 1.4% to the house edge. Meanwhile, single sessions are always unpredictable. You can win or lose far more than the edge suggests, which is why demo results tell you nothing about real-money play.

Playing blackjack for real money

There is no need to move on from free blackjack at all. If you do decide to play for real, choose a casino licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. UK-licensed sites must check your age before you play, even on their demo games. Before you start, set a deposit limit and a time limit, and never chase losses. You can compare licensed sites in our UK casino reviews, or learn more in our online casino basics guide.

If gambling stops being fun, you can block all UK-licensed gambling sites with GAMSTOP.
