Safer gambling tools: limits, time-outs and GAMSTOP

By The Casino Deals team · Updated · 6 min read

Every casino licensed in Great Britain has to give you tools to stay in control. They’re quick to set up, and the best time to use them is before you start playing, not after a bad session.

Deposit limits

A deposit limit caps how much you can add to your account each day, week or month. Since 31 October 2025, casinos must prompt you to set one before your first deposit. Setting a limit is the default, and you have to confirm if you don’t want one.

Lowering a limit takes effect straight away. Raising it only happens after a cooling-off period, so you can’t increase it on impulse.

Reality checks and session information

Reality checks are pop-up reminders showing how long you’ve been playing. You can usually choose how often they appear. On online slots, your total wins or losses and time played for the session must also be shown on screen.

Time-outs

A time-out blocks you from one casino for a short period, typically anything from 24 hours to six weeks. You can’t cancel it early.

Self-exclusion and GAMSTOP

Self-exclusion is for a longer break. At a single casino, it lasts at least six months.

GAMSTOP is a free national scheme that excludes you from every online gambling company licensed in Great Britain in one go. You can choose six months, one year or five years.
