Online slot stake limits in the UK
Online slots in Great Britain now have a maximum stake per spin. The limit depends on your age, it’s applied automatically by every licensed casino, and it sits alongside a set of game design rules that have been in place since 2021.
The limits at a glance
| Your age | Maximum stake | In force since |
|---|---|---|
| 25 and over | £5 per spin | 9 April 2025 |
| 18 to 24 | £2 per spin | 21 May 2025 |
The limits apply to every online slot offered by a casino licensed by the Gambling Commission. Casinos use the date of birth you verified when you opened your account, so you don’t need to do anything.
What counts as a spin
Technically, the limit applies to each game cycle. A game cycle starts when you press spin and ends when all stakes are settled, either lost or paid out.
Free spins and bonus features that are triggered during a game don’t count as extra staking. Neither does a gamble or prize-accept option that doesn’t ask you for another stake.
What the limit doesn’t cover
- Table games such as roulette and blackjack, including live dealer versions.
- Slot machines in arcades, bingo halls and betting shops, which are covered by separate land-based rules.
- Casinos that aren’t licensed in Great Britain, which you shouldn’t be using in the first place.

The other slot rules you’ll notice
Since 31 October 2021, online slots in Great Britain must also follow these design rules:
- No spin can be faster than 2.5 seconds.
- No autoplay.
- No turbo or slam-stop features that speed up play.
- No sounds or animations that celebrate a “win” that’s equal to or less than your stake.
- Your total wins or losses and the time you’ve played must be shown during a session.
Why the rules exist
The aim is slower play with smaller stakes. Online slots are the fastest form of gambling, so the Gambling Commission has focused its rules there. The stake limits apply to everyone, but you can go further by setting your own deposit limits. See our safer gambling tools guide.
