Progressive jackpots explained
Progressive jackpots are behind the biggest online casino wins. They’re also some of the longest odds in gambling. Here’s how they grow, the different kinds, and what to check before you play.
How a progressive jackpot grows
A small slice of every stake on a progressive game is added to the jackpot pot. The prize keeps rising until someone wins it, then resets to a starting amount, known as the seed, and begins growing again.
Types of jackpot
| Type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Single-game | The pot is fed only by stakes on that one game at that casino. |
| Networked | Many casinos share one pot, so it grows faster and larger, sometimes into the millions. |
| Must-drop / daily | The jackpot is guaranteed to pay before a set time or amount, such as every day. |
| Tiered | Several jackpot levels, from small frequent prizes to a rare top prize. |
The odds and RTP
The chance of hitting a major progressive on any one spin is tiny. And because part of every stake funds the jackpot, the game’s regular return to player is often lower than a similar non-jackpot slot. In other words, you give up a little on every spin for a very small chance at a huge prize. Our RTP and volatility video explains how this works.
Check how the jackpot triggers
- Random trigger: can land on any spin, sometimes with better chances at higher stakes.
- Bonus game: you need to reach a jackpot feature or wheel first.
- Opt-in: some jackpots require an extra side stake to be eligible.
The stake limit still applies: £5 a spin if you’re 25 or over and £2 if you’re 18 to 24. See our stake limits guide.
A sensible approach
Play progressives for the excitement, not as a plan. Set a budget you’re happy to lose, decide how long you’ll play, and stop when you reach either. Chasing a jackpot because it’s “due” doesn’t work: every spin has the same odds.
Progressive jackpots explained FAQs
How do progressive jackpots work?
A small part of each stake is added to a growing prize pot until someone wins it, then the pot resets.
Is a progressive jackpot ever ‘due’ to pay?
Not on standard progressives. Each spin is independent. Must-drop jackpots are the exception, as they guarantee a payout by a set time or amount.
Do jackpot slots have lower RTP?
Often, because part of each stake goes into the jackpot rather than regular wins.
Does betting more increase my jackpot chances?
On some games, yes. Check the game’s help screen.
